Q & A with Zac Hyden

Join us on March 10th, 2023, from 5:00PM-7:30PM in Rockefeller Hall 201, Schwartz Auditorium, for a Q&A with Zac Hyden, a community organizer and founder of the Automotive Free Clinic (AFC)—an organization which, in their own words, comprises of “regular, working class people who want to serve the community and make people’s lives easier" through low/no-cost automotive repairs in rural Alabama—moderated by Daniel Marshall, co-founder of the Sand Mountain Cooperative Education Center (SCMEC).

In the talk, Zac will talk about his experience as a community organizer—he previously founded the Magic City Agriculture Project and The Cooperative New School for Urban Studies and Environmental Justice—and work that the AFC is doing. This includes their material work—providing free and low cost auto repairs to community members and diverting money from the auto economy to support community members as opposed to capitalist structures—as well as their cultural work—primarily online popular education using a Freirean democratic and community led model.

The AFC and SMCEC are also part of the Education and Economic Resource Organizing network, which focuses on supporting organizations that work with everyday people to build new systems that meet community needs, beginning with mutual aid and eventually transitioning into resilient community development organizations through addressing multiple interacting systems of domination.
